Forager's Dinner At The Forest Side

Join food historian, John Crouch, director of the Wordsworth Trust, Michael McGregor, and Forest Side’s head chef Kevin Tickle for a foragers dinner on Wednesday 14th June 2017.

During the evening, Kevin will create a unique six course menu paired with accompanying wines by Forest Side’s head sommelier, John will share his unique insight into the traditions and history of food in Cumbria and Michael will give us a little peak into the world of one of the world’s greatest poets… William Wordsworth and the work of the Wordsworth Trust…

Michael explains: ‘’The forager’s dinner will present a fascinating and unusual perspective on the life of William and Dorothy Wordsworth, examining their relationship with food and the landscape…”

John notes: ‘’Many are really surprised by the food heritage of the area and by some of the things we used to eat… for example Dorothy Wordsworth talks about Stanning Pies, a very unusual sweet mince pie, made with minced lamb, sugar, orange peel and rum in her Christmas journal of 1801… they got their name because they were raised or standing… they were a real staple in the 18th and 19th centuries…’’

Kevin further adds: ‘’I was recently given a copy of Cooking and Dining with the Wordsworths, there are over 100 recipes from the manuscript recipe books of the Wordsworth, Coleridge. Hutchinson and Fricker families… as a chef it’s interesting reading about what people used to eat… I mean how intriguing does Coleridge’s Utopia chicken sound… our food history can inspire you in so many ways, it’s worth taking the time to find out about what’s gone before…’’

The dinner will be hosted in the Forest Side’s Private Dining room for up to 8 guests. The evening starts at 7pm with a glass of fizz, giving guests the opportunity to mingle before sitting down with John and Michael to enjoy a convivial and informative evening and of course a specially prepared menu created by Kevin Tickle with accompanying wines, coffee and petit fours.

Dinner is priced at £145 per person.
